Police and firefighters are on the scene of a building
collapse that followed an explosion in New York City’s
East Village neighborhood.
According to CBS New York, the explosion and following collapse were reported at 125 Second Avenue, a residential and commercial building, around 3:20 p.m. on Thursday.
The Fire Department confirmed multiple injuries have been reported, with at least two people being taken to Bellevue hospital for treatment. The building next to 125 Second Avenue, 123 E 2nd Street, is said to have collapsed as well and firefighters are still fighting flames at 121 E 2nd Street, reports Gothamist.
According to the Department of Building records, there was a stop-work order on the building issued in 2004. Con Edison has currently shut down gas to the area, while emergency responders have shut down the blocks surrounding the affected buildings.
