The  2017 African Cup Of Nations, AFCON 2017, group qualifiers have been drawn  and Nigeria is set to play seven time winners Egypt in Group G.

AFCON 2017 Qualifiers: Super Eagles Draw Egypt

Gabon has been confirmed as the host country for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Libya had been initially selected to stage the competition, but its hosting rights were withdrawn in August last year due to the unstable security situation in the country.

2015 winners Ivory Coast will play Sudan in Group I. The draws were made in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday. Nigeria failed to qualify for AFCON 2015 but won the previous edition in 2013.

The groups in full:

Group A: Liberia, Djibouti, Tunisia, Togo

Group B: CAR,  Madagascar, DRC, Angola

Group C: Benin, Mali, Equatorial Guinea, South Sudan

Group D: Botswana, , Burkina Faso, Uganda, Comoros Island , Comoros

Group E: Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Congo Brazzaville, Zambia

Group F: Sao Tome, Cape Verde, Morocco, Libya

Group G: Tanzania , Chad, Nigeria, Egypt

Group H: Rwanda, Mauritius, Mozambique, Ghana

Group I: Sierra Leone , Ivory Coast, Sudan, Gabon

Group J : Seychelles, Lesotho, Algeria, Ethiopia

Group K: Burundi, Namibia, Senegal, Namibia

Group L: Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Guinea, Malawi

Group M: Gambia, Mauritania, Cameroon, South Africa

Nigeria’s first match will be against Chad in Nigeria on 12th of June 2015.

Nigerians on social media have also reacted to Nigeria’s chances of qualitication. The general tone shows that the populace hope Nigeria can qualify from a relatively easy group with Egypt thought to be the only NAtion with a serious threat.

Mavin artiste, Korede Bello, was invited to sing his hit song, Godwin, at the youthful Harvesters International Christian Centre (HICC) in Lekki Lagos as the church marked the Easter celebration on Sunday April 5th. Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Baosari Suara Haruna, dies at 93

The death has been announced of Sheikh Baosari Suara Haruna III, the Chief Imam of Ibadan land. Alhaji Ishaq Sanni, Chairman, Muslim Community of Oyo State confirmed the death of the Islamic scholar to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday morning in Ibadan.

Sanni explained that the deceased died after a brief illness in Ibadan at the age of 93. He said that until his death, the cleric was the President-General, League of Imams and Alfas in South West, including Edo and Delta states. According to him, the remains of Haruna would be buried in his Agbeni residence, Ibadan, at 3 p.m. after Janazah prayers at Oja’ba Central Mosque, Ibadan, on Thursday (April 9). The late scholar was turbaned as the Chief Imam of Ibadan land in 1995. (NAN)

Sierra Leone sprinter, who lost entire family to Ebola, now homeless on streets of London

20 year old Jimmy Thoronka, a top sprinter from Sierra Leone who competed at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in August 2014 is now broke, homeless and living illegally on the streets of London. Jimmy vanished after the Games where he competed in the 100-meter relay race after he was told that his entire adoptive family had been wiped out by Ebola in the small village of Bombali district in Sierra Leone.

While trying to find his feet in London, his passport and all the money he had was stolen from him...

Ohaneze Ndigbo appeals to Igbos to forget Obas threat, sues for peace

Notable Igbo group, Ohaneze Ndigbo has asked all Ndigbos resident in Lagos to disregard the threat from the Oba of Lagos on the oncoming Governorship election. In a statement released and signed by the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Ralph Obioha, the group said it has accepted the Oba's explanation which was released from his palace...

Elder brother of Sokoto state Governor kidnapped

The elder brother to the Sokoto state Governor, Aliyu Wammako (pictured), Alhaji Salihu Baraden Wamakko was kidnapped by unknown gunmen at his farm in Sokoto state yesterday evening April 8th.

The Sokoto state Police spokesperson, DSP Al-Mustapha Sani while confirming the kidnap said the police is now on the trail of the abductors, as their men are now in search of them. The kidnappers are yet to contact the victim's family for any ransom.

South Africa footballer Richard Henyekane dies in car crash

South African footballer Richard Henyekane died in the early hours on Tuesday April 7th after the car he was traveling in got involved in accident in Bethlehem, a town in central South Africa. There were four passengers in the car, only Richard died. He was 31 years old. 

The late footballer played for the country's national team, Bafana Bafana and was signed to Free State Stars before his passing.

Just five months ago, Richard's younger brother Joseph Henyekane, also a professional footballer, died in December 2014. He was just 30 years old. May their souls rest in peace...amen.
