EXCLUSIVE: ‘I made Nigeria Proud’ – Beverly Ada Osu

Beverly Osu made history by becoming the first BBA contestant that was never nominated for eviction since the inception of the African franchise of the television series in 2003

24 hours after she arrived Nigeria, BBA The Chase finalist Beverly Osu was rushed to Faith City Hospital, Oju Olobun Close, off Bishop Oluwole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The BBA star was admitted for treatment due to a sprain ankle she suffered in the BBA house, a day to the finaleFor 91 days, the video vixen entertained Africa with so many tales of her life experiences and of course, the widely condemned sexual encounter that resulted from an in-house love affair between...

The one question everybody wanted to know was why she succumbed to her sexual urges and having sex with the South African while the entire continent watched.

I did not have sex in the house, I never had sex in the house. I had a relationship with Angelo Collins but we didn’t have sex. Nothing happened between me and Angelo. Though there were awkward moments, we never had sex. I know what happened then between us but we never got down to have sex’, she insists.

Rumour has it that Angelo has a girlfriend, but Beverly doesn’t seem to care. ‘I don’t want to talk about his so called girlfriend because I don’t know anything about her’.

Does she see a future in the relationship, she says, ‘We talk every day. He loves me and I still love him. I would get married to him if I had the chance.’

Of course on the issue of nudity she says, ‘all of us take our baths naked. So I shouldn’t be different because I went for a reality show. I shouldn’t be different from every other person, because I didn’t bring out my videos, Big Brother did so I should not be judged, and I represented Nigeria well’.

Particularly known for her fabulous stories: from abortion to rape to sleeping with men for money and dating musicians, she seems not to regret her actions at all. ‘I’m a very open person. Melvin knows, he stayed with me for 91 days. I say what’s on my mind, and for me to reveal myself to the world, it didn’t look like I was revealing myself to the world’, she said, ‘I was talking too much, maybe, but I’m on a reality show. I don’t regret saying the things that I said about me and my family, because if I have to be on this platform, people have to know the real me and what I’ve been through.’

As much as she discussed her mom’s ugly past on terrestrial television, her mom’s love was never lost from her side. ‘I can never go out of my way to disgrace and disappoint my mom intentionally. She has lectured me properly. And even if the whole world rejects me, my mom can’t reject me. I love my mom so much. I am her only daughter and last born. I’ve always been there for her and she’ll always be there for me.’

Her conduct in the house has been termed an embarrassment to Nigeria as a country, and Beverly apologises, ‘I don’t feel happy about it since this will be the first time I will be representing Nigeria… I’m sorry for embarrassing my country. I didn’t do it intentionally. My participation in the show was not to embarrass my country‘.

Was 2shotz the rapper boyfriend Beverly claimed was constantly abusing her? ‘No. I wasn’t referring to him. For me, 2shots is history. Thank you for reminding me about him.’

She may have lost out on the $300,000 prize money, but she made history by becoming the first BBA contestant that was never nominated for eviction since the inception of the African franchise of the television series in 2003 and for that she says, ‘I broke a record… I made Nigeria proud’.

Beverly has come out of the show a celebrity, whether for the right reasons or the wrong, but she is hoping to roll on with the little fame she has achieved. ‘Before I left, I had a show called ‘Beverly Says’ and I’m back to push it. If you guys watched Big Brother, you would be very sure that I can act, so I’d go into movies, but then, I have to finish school because I’m in my 200 level.’

Beverly’s unconditional love and support from her mom

She may have acted inappropriately in the house and gave many embarrassing testimonies of her mom on TV, Beverly no less gets her mother’s support and love.

One of her closest friends, Charity Owoh had earlier explained how proud her mom is of her conduct in the house. ‘She (Beverly’s mom) has seen everything. There’s the good and bad, of course she’s a mother so she would feel the way mothers would feel but she’s very proud of her daughter and says she’s a queen’, Owoh told Encomium Weekly.

The 21-year-old told stories of how her mom was deported from a foreign country and how she took take care of her siblings because her mom was hardly ever there.

On her arrival at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, both mom and daughter were over-whelmed with joy as they both shed a few tears and hugged and kissed. ‘She just wanted her daughter to come back home safe, every other thing didn’t matter’, a family friend told NET correspondent.

What’s next for Beverly?

Like she has rightly said, ‘I’d go into movies, but then, I have to finish school’. It is not as if her modeling and video vixen job was any great, and now she is considering movies. The funny thing with the Nigerian society is that, you may be celebrated one day, but if you slip up the next day, you are totally shoved aside.

One now wonders: Will her BBA image help her career in anyway or is it going to deter her from getting the much needed commercial endorsements and corporate patronage that could potentially lead her to financial independence?

Controversy, you may say sells, but will that phrase apply in Beverly’s case? She’s been condemned by many Nigerians, called so many unprintable names and branded an attention seeker and a confused kid. No doubt, she wants the fame and all its trappings, that much she’s made clear by her actions, but will her antecedents make room for her dreams to manifest given the hypocrisy of the Nigerian society.

Pasy Chikero, an author and media consultant feels that Beverly was not the best representation of the Nigerian woman. ‘In my opinion, she succeeded in battering the image of the Nigerian girl! When she stepped into the house, we thought she went in to represent us, but it turned out she went in to represent her pocket at the expense of the green, white, green flag she wrapped around her body’, Chikero said.

Will she settle for Afrocandy’s offer to start her acting career with a porn flick, Beverly says, ‘Thanks for the offer but no.

Where are the ex-contestants?

In the history of the reality show, it seems Nigerians always have a domineering role. The odd thing is that except for Uti Nwachukwu and Karen Igho, they always seem to go into oblivion after leaving the show.

For instance, Nigeria’s first contestant in the show back in 2003, Bayo Okoh, has not been seen or heard from since his participation in the show. The same goes for 2007 first runner-up, Ofunneka Moloku-Anyanwu, 2009 winner, Kelvin Pam and 2012′s contestants, Ola and Chris.

Somehow, Uti has remained relevant for doing a few modeling, acting and show hosting jobs here and there.

On the secret to remaining relevant, Uti say, ‘I have learnt not to depend on what I have or who I am because all of that can go in one day. I work hard everyday so as not to lose it. I do not relax and think, Oh I have arrived. I work like I don’t have anything at all, so that when I’m old I can relax’

Condemnation for the show

A few years ago, Nigeria’s Nobel Laurette, Professor Wole Soyinka‘s described the BBA show as ‘pervasive and debasing‘. This comment he made faulting the relevance of the show and its impact on the lives of the African youth.

Film maker, Charles Novia also condemned the show saying that it is totally con...‘, Novia said.

Some have argued that the whole premise of BBA is to have adults be their worst selves for our entertainment. ‘The show itself is for adults and not for children, and don’t expect adults not to behave like adults’, said an observer.

Uti who had come to Beverly’s defence stated, ‘That game is not easy at all. If you are a sexually active person and you like sex, three months is a long time to be celibate. Let’s not be hypocrites. If there were cameras in our homes, most of us won’t be able to show our faces in public.’

As much as many will condemn the show, the winners will however disagree and confirm the positive impact that the show has had on their lives. ‘Big Brother has contributed to what I am today, and I am an evidence of what they show can do for you’, 2011 winner, Karen Igho told NET.

Davido reacts by 'rich dad' comments

Father who beat to death man he caught raping his 5yr old daughter won't face charges

District Attorney Heather McMinn and Lavaca County Sheriff Mica Harmon appear at a news conference in Halletsville, Texas on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 in the aftermath of the killing
A Texas father who discovered a man raping his five-year-old daughter and beat him to death with his bare hands will not be charged with homicide under state law.

A Lavaca County grand jury decided not to press charges against the 23-year-old father in the June 9th death of Jesus Mora Flores, 47, who was killed inside a remote shack after he was caught molesting the young girl.

Under Texas state law, deadly force is authorized and indeed, justified in order to stop an aggravated sexual assault and coupled with the fact that the harrowing 911 calls made by the father back claims he even tried to save the pedophile's life led to the grand jury's decision.

Lavaca County sheriff's deputies said that the father, whose name has not been released to protect the little girl's identity, sent her and her brother to feed the family's chickens.

The boy rushed back to tell his dad that someone had grabbed his sister and taken her to a small secluded shack and the father rushed towards his daughter's screams and arrived to find them both with their underwear off.

Flying into a rage, the father beat Flores unconscious, but attempted to call 911 for the rapist after he had made sure his daughter was safe.

Sheriff Micah Harmon had said in June that he was not willing to press charges against the father, rather the case would be presented to a grand jury. At the time, Harmon said that the man was 'very remorseful' and didn't know at the time he had killed Flores.

'You have a right to defend your daughter,' Harmon told CNN at the time. 'The girl's father acted in defense of his third person. Once the investigation is completed we will submit it to the district attorney who then submits it to the grand jury, who will decide if they will indict him.'

Indeed, the father is heard profanely screaming at a dispatcher who couldn't locate the property.
Becoming increasingly frazzled, the father at one point tells the dispatcher he's going to put the man in his truck and drive him to a hospital before sheriff's deputies finally arrive.

V'Anne Huser, the father's attorney, sternly told reporters several times during a news conference at the Lavaca County courthouse that neither the father nor the family will ever give interviews.
'He's a peaceable soul,' Huser said. 'He had no intention to kill anybody that day.'

The attack happened on the family's ranch off a quiet, two-lane county road between the farming towns of Shiner and Yoakum.

Authorities say a witness saw Flores 'forcibly carrying' the girl into a secluded area and then scrambled to find the father. Running toward his daughter's screams, investigators said, the father pulled Flores off his child and 'inflicted several blows to the man's head and neck area.'

Emergency crews found Flores' pants and underwear pulled down on his lifeless body by the time they responded to the 911 call.

The girl was taken to a hospital and examined, and authorities say forensic evidence and witness accounts corroborated the father's story that his daughter was being sexually molested.

'Under the law in the state of Texas deadly force is authorized and justified in order to stop an aggravated sexual assault or sexual assault,' District Attorney Heather McMinn told reporters in June.

All the evidence provided by the sheriff's department and the Texas Rangers indicated that's what was occurring when the victim's father arrived at the scene,' she said. Authorities said he expressed regret at the killing at the time, and no evidence so far has led them to doubt his story. The girl's grandfather agreed it had been an accident.
'My son. Sorry,' the grandfather told the Victoria Advocate in broken English. 'It was an accident.'
Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon added: 'He was very remorseful. I don't think it was his intent for the man to die.'

Residents of the small Lavaca County town were largely in support of the father, saying the victim deserved it.
Sonny Jaehne, a Shiner native, told the Victoria Advocate: 'He got what he deserved, big time.
Friend Mark Harabis reiterated this: 'I agree with him totally. I would probably do worse.
'The family will have to deal with that the rest of their lives, no matter what happens to the father. Even if they let him go, he and his child will have to deal with that the rest of their lives.'

AfroCandy Opens Up On Her Séx Scenes and Much More

Controversy never seizes to follow US-based Nigerian actress, Judith Opara Mazagwu, a.k.a AfroCandy. The mother of two is however insisting that many Nigerians love what she is doing and they are rushing for her movies, even though some are pretending in public.

Below are AfroCandy's revelations on her latest séx scene and more:

Your recently released movie entitled “Destructive Instinct” has generated mixed reactions. Surely you expected this to happen.
Well, you should know that the people that are condemning my movie are not my fans. They are pure haters. My fans do not condemn me, but they love everything I do. They are even happy that I could beat the odds to release the movie regardless of all the setbacks. I don’t care about the people that are speaking negatively about the movie. They should get used to it because this is just the beginning. It is what it is! Their bad comments and attacks did not stop me, can never stop me and will never stop me.

Is it true that you want to bring the movie to Nigeria ?

Yes. I was even preparing to release it in Nigeria this month, but there is a little discrepancy with the marketers. They want the original version with the sex scenes, but we are still discussing on some issues. I didn’t get naked and didn’t have sex in the movie and will regard it as the usual or normal movie. So, we are still on it and as soon as we reach an agreement, I will drop it.

How convinced are you that the Censors Board will not ban the movie in Nigeria?
I already told you the marketers said I should leave that for them to handle. That is why they are asking for that version. I guess they know better.

Is it true that the main reason you produced the porn movie was to gain publicity here in Nigeria?
Publicity was not the intention. I was trying to break a record in Africa, not just in Nigeria. But the fact is that this kind of movie I made does not come without ‘publicity’. You know.

What is your grouse with Mercy Johnson, Uche Jumbo, Ini Edo and other Nigerian actresses?
I have nothing with or against any of the actresses .

It was reported that you always took Ini Edo along with you to locations back then. Does the relationship remain the same?
I never had any relationship with any of them. As for Ini Edo, I worked on the same productions with her director who had to beg me to pick her up from the bus stops. One was at the Amuwo Odofin. We were shooting a movie in Festac and she had no car then, while I already had my first car. The second time was at Ogba. That was years back.

Do you see these actresses ahead of you now?
I see myself as AfroCandy. I am who I am and doing my things in my own ways. I am not competing with any actress, neither am I trying to be like any other. So, I don’t see myself amidst anybody. Sometimes I make references just to let people know what is on, instead of just letting them judge me by mere assumption.

Don’t you feel you are missing as you are not based in Nigeria?
I live in a country where most of them long to live. I don’t think I am missing anything because I can still do whatever I want to do from America. The only thing is, I took a break to focus on raising my daughters as a single mother. I have to stay closer to them.My first has turned 18 and she is very responsible. I will loosen up a little bit to pay attention to my career though, so I will be doing more now. And whether I am in Nigeria or not, you won’t know the difference.

But Uche Ogbodo and Cossy Orjiakor remain your true friends in the industry?
I think I answered you before.

As a mother and an actress, which of your movies do your children like most?
I don’t discuss that with my children. I only give them a hint of my projects. They don’t even have to see my projects to like them, or approve of them, especially now that I have started doing more of explicit projects. Explicit stuffs are not for children.

But people, especially the under-aged, could gain access to these explicit stuff considering the level of technology we have today.
Well, you can’t control what children see on the internet, but your job as a parent is to educate them on the implications. If they are responsible kids, they stay away from such things. My kids are very intelligent, smart and very responsible. They know what to stay away from.

You recently celebrated your birthday. How fulfilled are you?
Very fulfilled.

How did you celebrate it?
I was too busy trying to release my movie. For now, it is all business before pleasure for me. When I achieve all I am working toward, I shall relax and celebrate birthdays because I don’t believe in chasing grasshoppers while the house is on fire.

How did you feel seeing your social media walls flooded with loads of birthday wishes?
It felt good.

You have more male fans than the females

I think so.

Maybe they got attracted to your weird postures?
The fact is that I am a female. More of the opposite sex should naturally be attracted to me.

Were you impressed with the turnout to your recent “Dick” auditioning?
I was overwhelmed, not just impressed. I even twitted about it. I got more responses than I expected.

What prompted the auditioning?
I cannot go into details about that for now.

In your last interview you promised to remarry soon. Any plan towards that yet?
No plans yet. Like I said, I am too busy for that.

Would you encourage any of your wards to go into acting or sing?
I have once answered that question but the press misconstrued it and wrote what I did not say. So, please, leave that. Leave my children out of it. They got their education to focus on and don’t need these distractions. If I want them to act or sing, they will. But for now, let them be.

A host of Nigerian, Ghanaian movie producers and you, in recent time, have appeared in movies that could pass as porno. Is it a new avenue?
It is what it is. That’s all I have to say.

What really spurred you to produce such movies?
I wanted to break a life time record. I wanted to set the pace while others can follow. You can say that I love making history.

Can you state briefly the main story line of the movie?
It is a long story, it’s a movie with four parts. I can’t start telling it here. I’ll rather have people get the movie and watch it to figure out what the story is all about.

How did you arrive at the title “Destructive Instinct”?
Honestly, it was my producer in Nigeria that gave the name ‘Destructive Instinct’. I can’t tell how he came about it.

Words were that it was because you’ve been starved of sex.
Oh, really? I never read about that. But I would let you and those that reported it to take a good look at me and tell me if I look like a sex starved woman. I guess it’s conji that is affecting our people. They are the ones that are sex-starved for them to have even had such crap in their hearts.

What are the challenges that almost turned you off during the course of producing that movie?
We had so many challenges right from the beginning to the end, but what matters is where we are. At last, the movie came out. It became a reality.

What should your fans expect after Destructive instinct?

I am coming out with a new movie titled ‘Ikebe Squad’ and a new single.

Would you say you are successful are as an actress?

I am not as successful as I want be, so I cannot tell you that I am successful; as long as the hustle continues, no success yet.

With your experience, how would you compare Naija entertainment and that of the US?
Is there any comparison between the two? The difference is clear because we are third in the world, meaning we are evolving in quantity, but USA is higher in quality, but we will get there someday.

How have you been able to contribute to the growth of the industry, especially in US?
You can see what I am doing already; at least I brought something new to the Industry.

One of the house mates of the just concluded Big Brother Africa (BBA), Beverly, had rejected your invitation to feature her in your film. How will you react to this?
I will not comment on that for now. I cannot answer anything that has to do with Beverly yet.

Would you honour the invitation if you were asked to participate in the next edition of BBA?
I want to reserve my comment on that. I remember the late Goldie featured as a guest artiste in one of the editions, but did AfroCandy represent Nigeria on BBA? I still want to keep mute on that. I don’t know, but it sounds funny to me.

How often do you follow the game?
I do not watch reality shows, but I know and heard about the activities on it.

As the African woman you claim to be, do you have African attires?
Of course, I have a lot them, Am I not an African Woman? Original Igbo Woman for that matter, I lived in Lagos for 14 years with all the Owambe parties.

Talking about appearance and looks, what reactions do you get from people when you go out?

Well, I do not walk around naked, and my stage appearance is usually different from the regular day to day dressing, so I do not raise any eyebrows when am on the streets. Sometimes you may not even recognise me; absolutely no different reactions.

As an African and Igbo woman, it is believed that people do not see single parents as responsible persons. What is your take to this?
That is Nigerian mentality, “slave mentality.” I want to tell you and those people with such mentalities to look around the world, especially in America, most influential people were raised by single mothers, President Obama was raised by a single mom, Oprah was raised by a single mom and the list goes on.

You mean you don’t have any regrets as a single mother, even if there were lots of condemnation to such development?
Does my looks and demeanor suggest that I have any regrets?

What is your most embarrassing moment?
I never really had a very embarrassing experience, but there was a time, I was moving into a new apartment, the truck and the movers were outside with some of my neighbours, I came out carrying something to the truck and somehow my wig got stuck on one of the things I was carrying and fell off of, everyone was looking at me before I realised I had no wigs on my head, I ran back into the house to fix it. It was a crazy experience.

Randy Pastor Used 30yrs Old Lady During Private Deliverance

A 46-year-old Pastor, Olamide Sobowale, of Glory Church of Christ Aladura, Oke-Itoku, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has been ordered to be remanded in prison custody for raping a woman while conducting a spiritual bath on her in his church backyard.

Pastor Sobowale, who was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Ogun State, on Monday was accused of raping 30-year-old Dupe Makinde, who lives in Isaje, Abeokuta, while giving her a spiritual bath which was recommended by the pastor.

The prosecuting counsel, Paul Etusi, told the court that the accused grabbed the complainant from behind while she was in a bathroom within the church premises and raped her.

Paul Etusi said the Dupe had already put the soap on her face as she began bathing when Pastor Sobowale from nowhere suddenly entered the bathroom and forcefully had sex with her, with soap on her face.

According to Paul Etusi, the pastor had told Dupe that he had a vision about her and asked her to come to his church for deliverance.

Paul Etusi said: “The accused has committed an offence contrary to section 357 and punishable under section 358 of criminal code of law of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006.”

Magistrate A. Araba wasted no time in sending Pastor Sobowale to prison custody and adjourned the case till September 16, 2013 for advise from the DPP and trial.

COZA's Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo Confirms He Had Sex With Ese Walter

Culled from thenetng.

Good morning, Man of God. Thank you for finally speaking on this issue sir.’
‘Welcome my brother, you are blessed. It is you I must thank for being very open-minded about this whole nonissue. I read your column last week and I must confess Nigeria is lucky to have people like you who still use their brain cells. The Lord be praised.’

‘Hallelujah. So, where do we start from?’
‘Let us start from the beginning. Praise the lord.’

‘Hallelujah. So, what was on your mind when you invited her to the terrace of your hotel suite?’
‘That’s not the beginning. It all started when I saw her in the congregation while preaching one Sunday; she was very vibratory, especially when taken over by the spirit doing praise and worship. Praise the lord. The spirit ministered to me that she would be useful in Pastoral Care. That was why I invited her to the unit. And she was very useful. Praise the lord.’

‘Hallelujah. By ‘very useful’ you are talking about your affair with her, right?’
‘No, we didn’t have an affair; we had an understanding. Praise the lord.

‘Really? Explain to me how that works, sir.’
‘Praise the lord. She understood that I am a Man of God with a weakness. I understood that she was a believer with an equal weakness. She understood that I was a married man; I understood that she was a willing woman. She understood that I could make her no promises of forevermore; I understood that she understood that by associating with me I would introduce her to a level of grace she was previously unaware of.'

‘Is this also the kind of understanding you had with others that led to your suspension in Ilorin and the 130 women you have slept with?’

‘Lie! Big lie! One hundred and thirty?!!! Haba, how could one man have done that, even with a never seen before level of grace? They just want to give my dog a bad name just to hang it. 120, I may accept, but 130? Never. When it is not as if I have a spare mobile joystick that I charge with car charger. People should fear God when saying some things o. Praise the lord.’

‘Let’s return to her story. So, what were your intentions when you invited her to your hotel suite?’
‘Special deliverance, I swear. God sees my heart. I had heard some uncomplimentary stuff about her and had caught her looking at me somehow during Pastoral Care Unit meetings, so I knew I had to intercede for her to retain God’s glory in her life. Praise the lord. Even when I asked her to come to the terrace it was so we could get cool breeze during the deliverance. All was well until she sat on my laps.’

‘What happened when she sat on your laps after you invited her to do so?’
‘My weakness arose. And when we kissed…my brother, do you eat seedless grapes? That’s what her tongue tasted like, soft and succulent. What was I to do? You people don’t know how hard it is to pastor a Pentecostal church in Nigeria, especially in this Abuja! You are there teaching the word of God and what do you have before you? Gorgeous women with sly smiles; with breasts, big and small, chiseled upon their chests like those old wood carvings; lips like cherries; eyes speaking to your soul, telling you their desires. Ah, until you have walked in my shoes you are not qualified to judge me. Praise the lord.’

‘Is it true you had sex with her everyday for seven days?’
‘Zachariah 10. It’s a level of grace you can’t understand.’

‘Ask the Lord for rain in the spring for he makes the storm clouds. And he will send showers of rain so every field becomes a lush pasture.’
‘You know your bible. Praise the lord.’

‘Hallelujah. And what styles and positions were employed?’
‘One does not talk about such things but suffice to say we were quite experimental, you know, those things one doesn’t ask from a wife. Praise the lord.’

‘So I’m free to assume missionary wasn’t top of the list?’
‘God forbid. Praise the lord. In fact, it was because of experimentation that we had our first quarrel.’

‘Really? What happened?’
‘She wanted me to use my silk ties to tie one of her legs to the door knob and the other to the window…I thought that was too much of a spread so I declined and she took offence. It was during round 4 on Day 7. Praise the lord.’

‘Is this also why you’ve refused to explain yourself to your congregation?’
‘They don’t need any explanation. They know me.’

‘We would have to end this interview on this note sir. Thanks again for your time. By the way, I don’t know your middle name?’
‘It’s Roderick.’

Ask the Lord for rain in the spring for he makes the storm clouds. And he will send showers of rain so every field becomes a lush pasture.’
‘You know your bible. Praise the lord.’
‘Hallelujah. And what styles and positions were employed?’
‘One does not talk about such things but suffice to say we were quite experimental, you know, those things

Strike: FG has bigger stake in varsities than ASUU- Suswam

CHAIRMAN of the Presidential Committee on Need Assessment of Nigerian Universities and Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, over the weekend expressed frustration that in spite of the demonstration of good faith by government over demands by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the striking lecturers have yet to call off their strike.

He told newsmen in a chat in Abuja that the N100 billion the federal government had been able to raise did not come easy and when combined with the distribution of projects in the 61 federal universities which President Goodluck Jonathan will kick-off soon, should have been enough to get the lecturers back to work.

The Federal Government had also earmarked N30 billion for the payment of earned allowance over which ASUU is demanding about N90 billion.

However, Suswam maintained that there was no way ASUU could have a bigger stake in the university system than the Federal Government which owned the institutions and therefore called on them to cooperate with government towards the resolution of the contending issues.

According to him, “ASUU is not a better stakeholder than the federal government. The Universities are owned by the Federal Government. So, the Federal Government is a better stakeholder on issues of infrastructure in the universities than ASUU. And so, it is for them to collaborate together and I urge the leadership of ASUU to collaborate with the federal government.”

Speaking on the difficulty in raising the N100 billion, he said it was not easy for government had to involve several agencies including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the National Communication Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The governor pointed out that the problem of ASUU was no longer the issue of infrastructure in the universities but their earned allowance as his committee has successfully carried out its assignment.

He added: “If they say that the 2009 agreement was delayed, at least, they have started now with N100 billion. N100 billion is no small money by any standard to inject into the infrastructure need of universities and all the 61 (federal) universities are going to benefit. If you see the distribution the way we have done it, all the universities are beneficiaries within the first phase. This is just a first phase.

“What we have done further, the President has allowed the committee to engage more meaningfully with these funding agencies so that by next year, the funding money that will be available to be injected into the infrastructure deficit in the universities is going to be even higher than the N100 billion. So, I don’t think that is the problem. The basic problem of ASUU is earned allowance. It is not about Needs assessment.”

On whether the situation with ASUU was not a stalemate, he explained further: “There is no stalemate. The committee on Needs Assessment which I chaired has done a wonderful work. All of us inclusive of the representatives of ASUU, together, we did the work, the committee accepted the work and the projects as distributed to the universities have already been distributed with the money.

“So, there is no issue as far as the need assessment is concerned at all because ASUU was deeply involved in the criteria which we adopted in the distribution of the funds, the N100 billion.

“To be able to pull N100 billion together wasn’t a small matter because Central Bank is involved, NNPC is involved, NCC is involved, all these funding agencies were all involved. I had to take time to meet with the chief executives of these agencies for us to streamline the funding and we have been able to have N100 billion which has already been distributed.

“We are hoping that given the delays of the due process, the President should be flagging off some of these projects in the first week of September. So, there is no issue with the Need Assessment.”

VCs, Students Seek End To Teachers’ Strike

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, and his Kwara State University counterpart, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, have called for an end to the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

They also urged the Federal Government and ASUU to reach quickly a compromise in the interest of country’s education and the students.

Interestingly, teachers of the two schools are not on strike.

Ambali said, “The two parties should discuss and bridge the gap between them. When two people are fighting, nobody will have absolute right. Nobody will be 100 per cent right. If you look at the two parties, there will be lapses in their actions.

“I just appeal to the parties to fill the gap, understand each other. Life is give and take. They should please come to an agreement very soon so that students will continue their studies.”

Na’Allah, who spoke on the sidelines of the establishment of the KWASU School of Business and Governance, frowned at the prolonged strike.

He noted that universities have symbiotic relationship, adding that they need collaboration to solve the country’s many problems.

He said, “In fact, we cannot over-emphasise how concerned KWASU is. KWASU is not in isolation. KWASU is a university in Nigeria and there is no way one university can succeed when others are on strike. So, KWASU is concerned.

“As a vice-chancellor, it is not for me to say that one person is at fault. We are all at fault. I think we have all failed Nigeria – the government and the people, especially those of us in the academia. We’ve not really explored enough.

“Government provides the facilities that are needed and as academics, we work, together to strengthen and ensure that we have universities that are world-class; that are relevant to the government of this nation.”

He added that the FG and ASUU must work together to return the universities to centres of excellence. According to him, when the University of Ibadan, University of Ife, Ahmadu Bello University and the others started, they were excellent institutions. “Unfortunately today the story is not the same,” he said.

Meanwhile, Oluwatobi Akinolu, a student of English Education at UNILORIN, also decried the frequent strike in the country.

He said, “FG should do something about ASUU’s demands. I heard that the government has made some offers. Maybe they are not sufficient for ASUU. But I appeal to ASUU to work with FG to resolve the issue.”

A second year Computer Science, KWASU, Saka Kamil, who accused the government of neglecting the sector, said he was unhappy that his colleagues in other universities were idling away at home.

He said, “The way the government is wasting money and owing lecturers is not good. These lecturers have families and responsibilities and they need to cater for them.”

According to a KWASU third year Mass Communication student, John Klutse, it is always sad for him to see his colleagues at home because of strikes.

He said, “Some of them who dream to come out tops may not achieve it because the strike is affecting their performance. FG and ASUU should reach a compromise. ASUU should also consider the interest of the affected students.”

LUTH Interns Protest Non-Payment Of 7 Months Salaries

INTERNS at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba, Lagos, yesterday, protested non-payment of seven months salaries, disrupting healthcare services.

The protesting professionals comprising doctors, pharmacists and others, vowed that they would not return to work until arrears of salaries were paid in full.

However, LUTH management attributed the development to implementation of the newly introduced centralized Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS.

The aggrieved interns lamented that some of them had not received any salary since they began their internship in January, this year.

Most of the protesters who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimization, said though they had lodged several complaints through their association, they were yet to get any response from the hospital’s management and the Federal Government on when their salaries would be paid.

One of them, a pharmacist, told Vanguard that many of them were yet to be captured by the IPPIS which the Federal Government introduced for payment of its staff’s salaries last year.

Their spokesperson said: “We will not go back to work until every one of us has been paid to the last kobo. We work day and night in this hospital without complain, but the only thing government knows is strike. We work like slaves, yet we are still struggling to feed.

“We cannot pay our rents. Those living outside the premises cannot afford the transport fares to work. We are struggling to feed and they expect us to keep quiet because we are interns, we will not. This is not the first time this is happening, but it will stop with us.”

Speaking with Vanguard, the Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Professor Akin Osibogun, blamed the situation to the newly introduced IPPIS. According to him, the un – paid salaries would be paid by the Federal Government. He denied involvement of the hospital management in the problem, saying “they are to be paid through Federal Government’s IPPIS recently introduced by the government.

The programme has been introduced in six Teaching Hospitals out of the 55 Federal government-owned facilities and will be extended to others later. I believe it is a teething problem that will be resolved very soon. It is a new programme and government will pay them all their entitlements in full. The salaries will come from Abuja and not the hospital.”

(video)Microsoft to buy Nokia's mobile phone unit

Deal worth $7.2bn to give US-based software company access to Finnish mobile-phone maker's patents and devices.

Microsoft is buying Nokia's devices and services business - and getting access to the company's patents - for a total of $7.2bn in an effort to expand its share of the smartphone market.
The corporations announced the deal late on Monday, saying that Microsoft will pay $5bn for the Nokia unit that makes mobile phones, including its line of Lumia smartphones that run Windows Phone software.
Microsoft is also paying $2.2bn for a 10-year licence to use Nokia's patents, with the option to extend it indefinitely.
"We are very excited about the proposal to bring the best mobile device efforts of Microsoft and Nokia together," Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, said in a memo to employees.
"We are receiving incredible talent, technology and IP [intellectual property]."
Microsoft said it is acquiring Nokia's Asha brand of low to mid-level smartphones and will license the Nokia brand for current Nokia mobile products.
Overseas cash resources
Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Washington, said it will draw from its overseas cash resources to fund the transaction.
When the deal closes in early 2014, about 32,000 Nokia employees will transfer to Microsoft, the companies said.
Nokia, based in Espoo, Finland, said Stephen Elop will step aside as president and CEO to become executive vice president of Nokia devices and services.
Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia chairman, will stay in his current role and assume the duties of interim CEO.
Elop is expected to join Microsoft at the close of the transaction, along with several Nokia vice presidents.
Nokia plans to hold a news conference on Tuesday morning in Finland to discuss the deal.click to watch video

Boy Orphaned At Nine Wins Shell Varsity Scholarship

At nine years, Master Lucky Ayolu, from Ekeni in Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State, lost his father and mother. Unexpectedly, life became cruel to him as he learnt to fend for himself. He told our correspondent that he took to fishing to pay for his fees in primary and secondary schools, as his grandmother, whom he stayed with, did not have enough. However, as someone who is destined to succeed in life, Ayolu, now 17 years, has become a beneficiary of Shell Petroleum DevelopmentCompany’s overseas scholarship. The scholarship scheme, whose yearly budget is about N120m, and managed by Bassan West Cluster Development Board, saw Ayolu as one of the 14 beneficiaries. Ayolu, who spoke to PUNCH Metro, said his life was a testimony that “absolute faith in God and hard work are very important in life.” He said, “Life has been unkind to me. But today, I have every cause to glorifyGod for lifting me up beyond my imagination. “At a point, I lost hope completely and started nursing the idea of taking my life. It was so bad that when I heard about this scholarship, I could not raise transport fare to the venue of the examination.” Ayolu said one of his cousins assisted him financially to obtain the scholarship form and also gave him transport fare from Ekene to Yenagoa where the test took place. “At the end of the test, I was successful. I am going to read Computer Science at Wisconsin University, Ghana. The discipline has been my lifelong ambition and I am grateful that God has used my community and Shell to make the dream a reality.” He advised other youths in difficult situation not to give up, saying that with hard work and trust in God, they would achieve their desires. He also urged the governments at all levels tolook into the plight of the orphans in the country. “Governments should look into the plight of orphaned children in the country. Theyshould not abandon them. The government should institute a scholarship scheme for the orphaned,” Ayolu said.
