The Liverpool skipper confidently converted spot-kicks either side of half-time after a handball from Rafael and a foul on Joe Allen by Phil Jones. Liverpool were awarded a third when Nemanja Vidic was sent off for a foul on Daniel Sturridge but Gerrard missed. However, Luis Suarez made amends late on when he poked home from close range.
