The good news here is that most ps2 out
on sale already have modchips pre-installed
on them.
FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY MODCHIPS:
there are different types of modchips and their basic functions are as follows.
(1)TO BYPASS SONY'S REGIONAL LOCKOUT SYSTEM:
modchips force the ps2 to play all games from all regions,whether ntsc,pal,ntsc uc,ntsc j etc.the regional lockout was originally embedded into the ps2 to prevent users from being able to play cheap imported games on their consoles.
(2)BYPASSING OF SONY'S MAGICGATE ENCRYPTION:
the ''magicgate'' that you see on your ps2's memory card slot was meant to restrict memory card usage only to those 8mb mem cards made by sony,but with modchips that has been cracked now you can use any mem card size you want on your ps2 even 64mb sizes have been made.
(3)BOOTING OF HOMEBREW ON THE USB:
some high-end modchips can also boot homebrew apps directly from the usb.
(4)PLAYING OF ALL REGION DVD MOVIES:
modchips have also forced the ps2 to be able to play any dvd movies you insert into your ps2,whether backups(dvd R ,dvd-R etc.) or originals.
N.B:the early japanese models(scph-10000,scph-15000 and scph-18000) don't have dvd drivers built in if you'd like to play dvd movies use 'Simple Media System'.
(5)PLAYING OF ALL REGION PS1 GAMES:
modchips also enable you to play all region ps1 games.
(6)PLAYING OF PS1 AND PS2 BACKUPS:
with modchips you can play ps1 and ps2 backups,this means you can either download games online,burn them to a disc and play on the ps2 or rip originals then burn to a disc and play.
(if your modchip doesn't support backups there's a way to play them with freemcboot via ESR)

''The ripper'' and ''Messiah'' so i'm gonna be posting boot methods for these two only if you want the full boot methods for all modchips just pm me.

6¦1Press and hold reset until the blue eject light comes on, then release reset (only takes about 1-2 sec)
NOTE: To disable the Messiah 2 hold reset for 5 seconds while booting.

NOTE:In rare situations there is alternative way to start DVD VIDEO. When RESET light isRED, press RESET and keep it pressed until theBLUElight of the EJECT button goes on.
Those are the methods that i know works for most ps2 consoles,since most consoles have these modchips installed.
