Essay
(1) In Brenhoma society, childless women have no respect. In
fact, they are always looked down upon. They are treated with
ignominy. Fate decides the position of each woman is
especially when such a woman is able to bear a male child
from whom the family name is sustained.
A case in point in Pokuwaa's childlessness which was largely
decided by fate. Inspite of Pokuwaa's rare sacrificial efforts,
she could not have a child. She even attributed her situation to
men's infertility. This made her to divorce and re-married but
to no avail. One would say that Kofi Daafo and Kwaku fosu were made.

scapegoats by Pokuwaa's desperate attempt to have a child a situation that was beyond the immediate control of these two erstwhile husbands.

The story paints d picture of an unfortunate man who struggle in d midst of hardship and tries to no avail. D narrative techniques exemplified in d novel " d old man & d sea" are as follows;
(i) irony
(ii) language
(iii) third person narrative
(iv) symbolism
(v) local colour
(vi) paradox.

(i)Irony: In the story, Santiago had made d greatest catch of
his life with d Marlin Fish, but ironically, d sharks had come
to eat it up wit d result dat what is brought to d shore is d
carcass of d skeleton.
(ii)Language : The choice of words is simple & straight
forward manner, however requires being familiar wit some
maritime registers in order 2 follow d event. The author uses
figurative expressions to convey his messages.

(iii) 3rd person : The author uses 3rd person point of view 2
pre-occupied his composition. He expresses it, he is
everywhere & knows everything about d old man
(iv) symbolism : d author uses symbol 2 convey his messages
like d use of Rosasy & holy pictures 2 depicts d strong
catholic faith forming d character of Santiago.

(v) local colour : The author uses spanish words 2 reflect
local colour of d language of d rustics. It gives us a clear
picture of its Cuban setting.
(vi) paradox : it is paradoxical dat d boy's master who
labours little & wit less fishing experience catches fish while a
more experienced & skilled old man does not catches any.

in the life of santiago as a fisherman,the followin attributes were learnt.
The story teaches us on how to be courageous through this santiagoi was able to achieve his aim even though the result was fruitless but he did not give up or discouraged.
Through that the old man epitomizes courage and endurance at the worst time.he displays hope and confidence even when he is not making progress in the catch.his eyes are said to radiate courage.
This also teaches us to be able to endure inn whatever the condition we found ourselves.He shows his endurance when he refuses to let go of the big fish he had already caught even when he did not kill or get full control of it.”fish i will stay with you until i’m dead”
we also leart to be hopeful in whatsoever condition we are able top find ourselves in as well as being confident and well determined.
