Manchester United Bid £37m For Juan Mata

It seems that the Juan Mata to Manchester United deal is not just another rumour and is close to being completed.

According to aBBC Football report, the Premier League champions have tabled a35 million bid for the Spanish playmaker who is unhappy with the limited chances he has got at Chelsea this season.

United have not acknowledged making an offer and there seems to be some disparity in his valuation.

Earlier, sources close to discussions between Chelsea and Manchester United claimed that the clubs had agreed a40m fee for Mata - however, Mata's personal consent is yet to be given for the deal to go ahead.

A report on The Guardiansaid that the transfer is said to be 'almost completed' - with the move seen as one which will help end the gloom and doom at United post the Alex Ferguson era.

There is just over a week left for the January transfer window to close and English clubs have been relatively quiet in this year's winter window - especially with Arsenal needing a striker and United desperate to get a creative midfielder who can improve their so far flailing fortunes.

Mata has found himself frozen out of the Chelsea team with the emergence of Oscar, Willian and Eden Hazard. It is surprising how his status at Chelsea has changed - from being the center of all their attacking moves under to becoming a fringe player in the space of half a season.

He has completed 90 minutes only three times this season and has started 11 league games. With the World Cup looming, he may well decide to swap blue for red. Mata has a contract with Chelsea till 2016.

There have been rumours about Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid being interested in him. A move to Barcelona has also been mentioned but United seem to be in pole position for his signature despite refusing to do business with Chelsea over Wayne Rooney during the summer window.

Also, one must remember that he will not be able to play for United in the Champions League after already having played for Chelsea.

Mourinho has already let Kevin De Bruyne leave the club this month, with the Belgian signing for Wolfsburg. Chelsea immediately brought back former player Nemanja Matic after the De Bruyne move.

Mata will add to players like Rooney, Shinji Kagawa and Adnan Januzaj who also operate capably in the No 10 role but there is clearly a need for refreshment.

If the move goes through - it would eclipse the 30.7 million spent on Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham Hotspur in 2008. A left back is also one of Moyes' priorities.
