The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned in strong terms the huge amount of money the first lady of the country, Mrs Patience Jonathan spent on a recent rally in Abuja.
The Association lamented that it’s sad that the office of the First Lady would spend such amount on a rally when the education sector is in a sorry state.
A statement issued by NANS National Financial Secretary, Ayenuro Timileyin and made available to reporters in Akure, noted that such reckless spending on a rally should be condemned by any right thinking Nigerian.
The statement reads in part,”It is highly saddening that at this point when the nation’s education sector is going through a tough time, the office of the first Lady would organize such a kangaroo rally.
“Vehicular and human traffic was effectively cut off from all the routes leading to the venue of the first lady’s rally tagged, “Nigerian Women Rally for Peace and Empowerment”.
“Frustrated motorists were forced to take any available space, thereby leading to a chaotic traffic snarl for the most part of that day.
“Money that is supposed to be channelled towards the education sector was wasted on mere jamboree”.
The student body therefore urged the federal government to declare a state of emergency in the education sector.
According to Ayenuro, the federal government must wake up from its slumber and address the demands of the striking lecturers, instead of spending money on irrelevant things that are not of national interest.
