University To Make Igbo Language Compulsory Course For All Students
University to make Igbo language compulsory course for all students
Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike, Director, Igbo Renaissance at the Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), Abia, said on Saturday that the university would soon introduce the Igbo language as a compulsory course in the second year.
Madubuike announced this at Uturu during the 6th edition of the Igbo (Uturu) Cultural Carnival, which held at the university.
"By the next two years, the university plans to introduce the Igbo language as a compulsory subject for all students in the second year.
"Whether you are Yoruba, Hausa or Efik, you must take Igbo as a compulsory subject, in spite of your area of specialization, he said.
Madubuike described the Igbo language as the soul of the culture of Ndigbo, adding that the disappearance of the language would mean the ultimate death of the culture.
Earlier, the traditional ruler of Oko in Anambra state, Igwe Laz Ekwueme, called for concerted efforts by people of the South-East to save the Igbo language from going extinct.
Ekwueme, who was the chairman of the carnival, expressed regret that the Igbo language was under serious threat, due to the decline in its usage as a means of communication in various families.
He noted that many families of Igbo origin preferred to communicate in foreign languages, especially the English language, with their children.
"More often, nowadays, you find many parents communicating with their children and relations in the English language, rather than the Igbo language, he said.
Ekwueme regretted that the development was capable of endangering the Igbo language, if not promptly checked.
The monarch, who was a former Minister of Education, commended the Chancellor of the University, Dr. Greg Ibe, for initiating the carnival.
"Anything that is done to encourage the sustenance of the Igbo language and culture would be encouraged,he said.
Ekwueme noted that the event would add value to similar efforts designed to re-establish and reinforce the Igbo culture.

James Avery, the actor who played Uncle Phil in popular 90s sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel Air has died. He passed away yesterday December 31st in an LA hospital days after undergoing open heart surgery. He died from complications from the operation. He was 65 years old. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

Chinese businessman Chen Guangbiao wants to buy The New York Times.An eccentric Chinese businessman with a penchant for publicity stunts is seeking to buy The New York Times Company.
Chen Guangbiao, a rags-to-riches tycoon who made millions in the recycling business, said he would fly to New York on Friday to meet with a representative of The Times.When it comes to The Times (NYT), Chen insists he is serious. "It's not a stunt," he said in a phone interview with CNN Thursday. "I have dreamed about the purchase for almost two years. I am very sincere about it."
While company shares spiked on initial reports of Chen's interest, there are reasons to believe the bid will not come to fruition. The newspaper's publisher, Arthur Sulzberger Jr., who is also chairman of the Times Company, has said that the paper is not for sale.
"Will our family seek to sell The Times?" Sulzberger said in August. "The answer to that is no."
To ensure control of the company and discourage takeover attempts, the Ochs-Sulzberger family maintains a trust of Class B shares that come with special voting rights. Without the family's participation, Chen will be limited to buying publicly available Class A shares.

Five Things that Every Windows PC Owner Must Do
1. Make a system restore or recovery diskA restore or recovery disk is a copy of the restore partition that comes with most PCs. Few manufacturers provide a Windows installation disk or even a restore disk with a PC these days so you have to make your own. If your hard drive ever fails, you’ll be glad you did. How to make a restore disk in Windows 7 is described here and for Windows 8 in this article. Also, many PCs come with OEM software for creating a restore disk from the restore partition. It won’t replace an up-to-date full backup but it’s a lot better than nothing.
If you are more ambitious, you can periodically create a new drive image with all your latest files. You can use one of the free disk imaging programs reviewed here. Making an image of an entire hard drive should be done on an external hard drive.
2. Back up your data
This may seem like stale advice but it has to be repeated. Everybody knows they should back up but they don’t. Back up seems to rank in popularity with the advice to get more exercise and eat more vegetables. Neglected it may be but backing up personal data and files is a must. Look what happens over and over. Somebody’s hard drive crashes or they lose their personal data to some malware infection and there go all those precious photos or other important files. Don’t let that happen to you.
Data backup is a simpler and quicker process than imaging a full disk so it can and should be done frequently. Personally, I use several external hard drives in rotation but a USB flash drive is also a convenient place to put data backups. Free software for creating backups is reviewed here.
3. Write down the Windows product key
It seems to happen all the time. People’s system gets bollixed and they need to reinstall Windows. Then they discover that they do not know the product key for the original installation. On laptops, it may be on the bottom of the case but often is not or is undecipherable. So record your product key in a safe place somewhere. If you don’t know what it is, this article gives some ways to reveal your Windows product key.
4. Make an emergency Windows boot or startup disk
Sometimes it happens that a PC won’t boot or load Windows when you turn it on. An emergency repair disk that can be booted can be a lifesaver when that happens. Both Windows 7 and Windows 8 provide for the creation of a CD or USB key to be used to repair a Windows installation that has corrupted system files and won’t boot. This is a much smaller disk than a full installation or restore disk and is just a set of tools to help repair the Windows system. Instructions for Windows 7 are in this article and for Windows 8 are here.

Another ASUU Strike Looms In LASU
It said the motion for the strike will be decided at their congress slated for early January, if no tangible progress is made. This was disclosed by the Chairman of ASUU-LASU, Dr. Adekunle Idris, at a press conference held at the university campus.
Idris said the national body of ASUU is aware that the issue had been there before the national strike commenced on July 1. He accused the university management of not being sensitive to the situation on campus, saying " at all press contacts during the national strike, it always impressed on stakeholders to intervene so that students can enjoy uninterrupted school calendar after the struggle, which they fail to do.”
