Nigerian Unemployed graduates to receive N19k monthly allowance?
Punch reports that the
conference’s Committee on Law, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Reform
made the recommendation but it can only fall through if it's accepted by
the
Federal Government.
A member of the committee said the
recommendation was one of the ways the committee members felt that crime
could be reduced in the country. He told Punch;
I have a feeling FG won't be interested in this. Who thinks it's a good idea?"The recommendation is our own way of finding solutions to the rising wave of crime in the country and to also force the government to do the needful for the increasing number of unemployed graduates in the country. We have done our part and it is left for the delegates to either reject or accept it at plenary.”

A US General on Thursday May 15th, said the Nigerian military is
becoming afraid of engaging Boko Haram insurgents and this might affect
the US level of involvement in finding the missing girls

Testifying on Thursday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the US Air Force Chief of staff, Gen. Mark Welsh III, said, “We’re now looking at a military force that is, quite frankly, becoming afraid to even engage. The United States doesn’t have the capacity, the capability to go rescue every kidnapped person around the world.”
The New York Times reported that the US might choose to minimize its involvement in the search for the over 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram due to doubts over Nigeria’s military capabilities. Continue...

Caleb University releases statement on students' riot on May 14th
The protest by male students on campus on Wednesday 14, May 2014 had nothing to do with religion. A certain man, a non student was apprehended by our security personnel for trying to bring prohibited items into the school. After much interrogation, he mentioned the names of the culprits involved. An official went to the male hostel to get the students mentioned, one of whom was praying in the hostel. The students involved along with other students faced with student disciplinary committee cases took advantage of the interruption of prayers to start the protest.
The university properties worth millions were destroyed and this act was carried out by the male students. The students have been sent home on recess to resume back 2nd of June 2014.

This is the copy of the judgment. I have it. Manslaughter has no option of fine. Her sentence was reduced from seven years to five years and we all know she went to jail. The judgment reads in part, ‘there is proof that she drove recklessly and caused the death of Dr. Sura Giwa contrary to the road traffic laws of Lagos State.’ She was drunk. Rocket attack on Soye village in Borno state kills 31, injures many
The number of the dead following the rocket attack on Soye village market near Bama which killed 29 and injured many others has risen to 31. Chairman of Bama local government area, baba Shehu Gulumba has visited the general hospital in the area to sympathize with victims and also made a fifty thousand naira cash donation to a boy who sustained severe burns. Three out of the seven who were injured having died; the remaining four are receiving treatment in Maiduguri while five have already been discharged.

Ogwuche is said to be a student of Arabic Language at the International University of Africa, Sudan. He is British born and is the son of retired Col. Agene Ogwuche. He served in the Intelligence Unit of the Nigerian Army at Child Avenue, Arakan Barracks, Lagos, between 2001 and 2006 and was arrested in 2011 for being involved in terror activities but was released on bail to his father.

Prof Dora Akunyili begins treatment in India
Ailing ex-minister of Information and former NAFDAC boss,
Prof Dora Akunyili who reportedly left for India on Sunday May 11th
after her health deteriorated, is said to have started her
treatment.
According to a statement she released through her Media
Advisor, Mr. Isaac Umunna, Prof. Akunyili expressed gratitude for the
outpouring of prayers and goodwill towards her since the information of
her deteriorating health emerged on Sunday. The statement reads in part;
"I am touched – indeed, overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and affection by my fellow countrymen and women, as well as numerous other well wishers around the world, many of whom have not only been praying for me but have also been mobilising through the various social networks for God’s healing hands to come upon me. I am confident that Almighty God will hear our prayers and grant me quick recovery. I love you all and pray that Almighty God blesses you all."Akunyili left for India in company of her husband, Dr Chike Akunyili. She is said to be responding well to treatment.
IG of police MD Abubakar goes on terminal leave
The
Inspector of Police Mohammed Abubakar has been asked to proceed on
compulsory
leave by president Jonathan allegedly because of the rising insecurity
in the country under his watch and police under-performance under his
leadership.
The Secretary to the Government, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim,
issued a letter signed by the president on Monday May 12th asking the
IG to hand over to his immediate subordinate, Suleiman Fakai, who is
the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Finance and
Administration.
MD Abubakar became Inspector General of Police on
January 25, 2012. His tenure was supposed to expire in July 2014, as
he's due to retire July 30th 2014 based on mandatory retirement age
after serving in the Nigerian Police Force for 35 years but had applied
for extention of his tenure, but was turned down by the presidency.
Fakai will step in an acting capacity, until a new Inspector General is announced.
I liked Abubakar. I think he brought some sanity to the force. .It was under his leadership that police checkpoints on highways
through which they extorted motorists and other road users were stopped.
