Students Protest the Over 9 Months Old ASUP Strike! PHOTOS

In case you didn't know, Academic Staffs Union of Nigerian polytechnics (ASUP) have been on a strike for over 9 Months now, which totals almost an academic year!!! Nollywood actor, Chinedu Ikedieze popularly known as Aki who got conferred with the MFR title by President Jonathan in July 2010 says the national title does not come with any visible benefits to him. Aki in a chat with Yes! magazine this week said there is no monetary value or special benefits to the title as obtained in western countries.

"The only joy in it is the recognition. When I am traveling and I get to the Airport, I get special preference and recognition. Apart from that, I don't get any other thing. I don't get paid, I don't get any special benefits as an MFR. As an MFR, I hold the same position with some of those who are Members of the British Empire (MBE) and they have some special benefits in the international community and honourary recognitions but those things are not here" he said.

Late top music producer Harold Obiajulu Mordi a.k.a HCode, who died on Friday March 7th after suffering an asthma attack, will be laid to rest tomorrow Wednesday, March 19.

The Northern States Governors’ Forum has resolved to abolish payment of fees in secondary schools in the region in a bid to boost enrolment of students.
Its Chairman, Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger, made this known in Minna on Monday at the National Association of Nigerian Students’ (NANS) award ceremony to distinguished Nigerians.
The forum also agreed to harmonise fees in its tertiary institutions and reintroduce the “Grade 2 Teachers Training Programme’’, abolished in Nigeria to improve the standard of teaching in schools.
Represented by Dr Muhammad Nuhu, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Aliyu said that the forum also decided to close the educational gap between male and female students in the region.
Aliyu, who described education as the bedrock of any development, said they had also resolved to establish schools of preliminary studies to prepare students for admission into tertiary institutions.
He said an education conference aimed at addressing the problems associated with the development of education in the region, the problem of Almajiri and falling standard of education will be held soon.

US Navy Seals boarded and took control of a North Korea-flagged tanker that had loaded crude oil at a port held by rebels in eastern Libya, the Pentagon says.
No one was hurt “when US forces, at the request of both the Libyan and Cypriot governments, boarded and took control of the commercial tanker Morning Glory, a stateless vessel seized earlier this month by three armed Libyans,” Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement.
The operation was approved by President Barack Obama and was conducted just after 0200 GMT (1300 AEDT) on Monday “in international waters southeast of Cyprus.”
The Morning Glory “is carrying a cargo of oil owned by the Libyan government’s National Oil Company. The ship and its cargo were illicitly obtained from the Libyan port of As-Sidra,” the statement read.
