It was the first meeting between the two teams in the tournament’s history, and the first-half played out a little bit like a first date at the Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium. Both the Swedes and the Mexicans looked nervous and unwilling to gamble much in attack. 25,000 Students Apply For Scholarship In Kano

No fewer than 25,000 Kano State students who gained admission into tertiary institutions in the last academic session across the country applied for the state government¡¯s sponsorship.

The Executive Secretary of the state¡¯s Scholarship Board, Alhaji Usman Ririwai, made the disclosure when he visited the Sa¡¯adu Rimi College of Education, Kano, where the scholarship interview was being conducted on Wednesday.

He said the interview, which commenced last week, was for students admitted during the
2011/2012 academic session. According to him, the board has earmarked N1 billion this year for the payment of scholarship allowances to students.

He said ¡°we have so far paid outstanding allowances amounting to N360 million to 95 per cent of the students in respect of 2009/2010 and 2011/2012 academic sessions.

¡°Before the end of this year, we will pay the remaining five per cent.¡±

The executive secretary said a total of 3,300 eligible students underwent the interview at the venue.

Tambuwal Says House Will Approve Money to End ASUU Strike

House of Rep Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, has said if there is a need to make extra budgetary provisions for the Federal Government to resolve the lingering face-off between it and the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), the House would do so.



“Let me use this opportunity to appeal to both the Executive arm and the authorities of ASUU to quickly resolve the problem. If there is need for any appropriation, the House will expeditiously assent to it in the interest of our students and the nation.”

The Speaker spoke in Abuja when he received a briefing on the update of the ASUU strike from the Aminu Suleiman-led House Committee on Education.

The House mandated the Education committee to investigate the face-off by highlighting the areas of conflict and proffer solutions.

Tambuwal urged all parties to consider the interest of the students and the educational future of the nation.

Insurgents: 24-hour curfew imposed on Yobe

Damaturu – The military on Friday imposed a 24-hour curfew on Yobe following attacks on Damaturu by suspected insurgents on Thursday night.
This is contained in a statement signed by Capt. Eli Lazarus, spokesman of the 3 Division Special Operations Battalion, Damaturu.
“The 3 Division Special Operation Battalion, Damaturu, hereby imposes a 24-hour curfew across Yobe state, with immediate effect.
“Law-abiding citizens are enjoined to remain calm as the battalion steps up its operation to rid the state of insurgents,” he said. (NAN)
